Unlocking Literacy: Teaching Argument Writing for Multilingual Learners

Students need support synthesizing multiple sources to build strong and persuasive arguments. Join us as we learn and use research- based cognitive strategies to support students in the reading and synthesizing of multiple texts in arguments. We’ll focus on teaching revision strategies for precise writing and integrating contextualized language support to scaffold multilingual students’ academic literacy development. Participants will be introduced to UCLA Writing Project’s approach to Pathway Strategies for Argument Writing:

  • Supporting multilingual learners as they read for rhetoric and argument
  • Preparing for synthesis writing by engaging in Atwoodian Table talk
  • Building cognitive writing tools, such as color coding and using student exemplars
  • Revising writing using Grammar Brushstrokes strategy

Fee: $200

School Purchase Orders Accepted (Title I or Title III funding may be used.)

Angie Yi has been teaching high school for 18 years. She is particularly proud of the curriculum she has helped create at her school site: Multicultural Literature, Literature and the Environment, and American Voices. She loves to bring in diverse voices that reflect the complex and beautiful world we live in. She has led professional development workshops on the teaching of writing and grammar through the UCLA Writing Project and loves to meet other educators to enthusiastically collaborate and commiserate with and cheer them on.

Unlocking Literacy: A Toolkit for Academic Success is designed for educators who work with students from diverse linguistic backgrounds, including English Language Learners. This hands-on workshop will equip teachers with effective, research-based strategies and tools to foster academic success in reading, writing, and critical thinking. Special attention will be given to bridging language gaps, enhancing comprehension, and developing writing skills in ways that are accessible to all learners, regardless of their linguistic background.

Educators will leave with practical, ready-to-implement resources for cultivating academic literacy in their classrooms, ensuring that learners are prepared for success in all academic areas. Whether you teach English Language Arts, Social Studies, or other content areas, this toolkit will provide strategies that can be applied across subjects to boost academic achievement for all students.
