July 23-26, 2019 , PLUS a half-day follow-up session (TBD)
Multicultural Learning Center Middle School
8211 Remmet Avenue, Canoga Park, CA 91303
During this 4-day workshop we will focus on the development of children’s mathematical thinking in grades K-5 in a Spanish Dual Language setting. We will explore how children’s understandings of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division develop and how students construct concepts of place value across the grades. Participants will learn how to use this knowledge to make instructional decisions while honoring the linguistic and mathematical resources students bring into the classroom. They will develop classroom practices that enable all students to explain their thinking and engage in each other’s ideas. Participants explore productive problem-solving structures and will develop expertise around a number of instructional activities that ensure access and equity.
