UCLA’s Department of Education has been featured among the top three graduate education schools in the nation, according to an annual survey by U.S. News and World Report. UCLA is the only UC – and one of only three West Coast schools – in the top ten.
UCLA Teacher Education Program Professor Megan Loef Franke was elected to the National Academy of Education in 2017, one of three in the University of California system. Dr. Franke studies how teachers make use of research-based information about the development of children’s mathematical thinking (Cognitively Guided Instruction) and how CGI supports student learning in mathematics.
UCLA Professor of Education Tyrone Howard has been selected as one of 14 scholars as a 2017 AERA Fellow by the American Educational Research Association. He is the founding and current executive director of the Black Male Institute at UCLA and the Associate Dean for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion at UCLA Ed & IS.
“I am very honored to get the recognition, and I’m happy that my school gets an award, too,” Yom said. “I genuinely think that it is my students who have made me what I am. It is them who make me shine.”
Over the last four years, all of Yom’s calculus students at Lincoln High School have passed the AP exam, nearly all of them earning maximum credit on the test.
TEP Grad Eduardo Lopez Honored by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics
For the past decade he has taught at Theodore Roosevelt Senior High School (RHS), located in East Los Angeles. He is a National Board Certified Teacher and Social Science educator. Early in his profession, Eduardo realized that in order to have a lasting impact on students he needed to form partnerships that went beyond the four walls of his classroom.
Seven graduates from Center X’s signature Teacher Education Program were recognized by Superintendent King as exceptional educators. Israel Bautista, Monique Brusca, Maria Debuque, Natalie Elliott, Shannon Garrison, Gabriela Spilman, and Anthony Yom were recognized at a luncheon and awards ceremony on August 11.
Tyler Sherman, Science teacher at West Adams Prep High School, was selected as an LAUSD Teacher Rookie of the Year for his outstanding service to the students of LAUSD during his first year of teaching.
