Reimagining the City as a Metaphor for K-12 Learning: an Introduction to Design-Based Learning

Due to a generous donation from the Center for City Building Education, the non-profit organization that supports the work of the Design-Based Learning Project at UCLA Center X, 20 teacher scholarships will be available for our upcoming online workshop, Reimagining the City as a Metaphor for K–12 Learning: an Introduction to Design-Based Learning on January 5–7, 2021.

Teacher pairs (from the same school) are highly encouraged to apply for the scholarship opportunity. Please click here to apply. Application deadline is December 28th, but we encourage you to apply as early as possible to ensure your spot in the training. All applicants will be notified of scholarship acceptance by December 30th (or earlier). Accepted scholarship applicants will be required to demonstrate how they have implemented Design-Based Learning into their classroom and submit work to the Center for City Building Education by July 1, 2021. Upon acceptance, scholarship recipients will be sent detailed information about these implementation requirements.

Do you want to learn about the Doreen Nelson method of Design-Based Learning? Join us for a 3-day introductory workshop.

In this hands-on, immersive workshop, teachers will learn the tools and strategies for presenting Design Challenges in the online, in-person, or hybrid classroom setting and how to develop standards-aligned Guided Lessons in core subject areas. Teachers will learn instructional techniques that foster student creativity and critical thinking skills and allow opportunities for communication and collaboration among students.

During the workshop you will:

  • Learn the tools and techniques for presenting Design Challenges to your students in a virtual, in-person, or hybrid classroom setting.
  • Develop standards-aligned Guided Lessons that connect to Design Challenges
  • Begin to develop an interdisciplinary curriculum to deliver the content in your specific grade level and/or subject area
  • Learn instructional techniques that foster student creativity and critical thinking skills and allow opportunities for communication and collaboration among students.
