UCLA project reveals ‘invisible’ presence of the Tongva

A group of Tongva educators gathered with two dozen elementary school teachers from across Los Angeles, as part of a UCLA History-Geography Project led program to increase the educators’ understanding of the Tongva community and history, with the goal of developing curriculum for third-grade teachers.

UCLA Partnership with Bethany Baptist Church Supports Summer Learning

Overseen by UCLA’s Center X and Bethany Baptist Church of Los Angeles, the LAUNCH Academy provides innovative math and science learning opportunities based on university research. The teachers selected to teach in this program are from schools throughout Los Angeles and are all connected to the UCLA Mathematics Project and the UCLA Science Project, two of Center X’s subject matter initiatives.

Bethany Baptist and UCLA Co-sponsor Launch Academy

The Launch Academy is a six-week summer program focusing on rigorous, yet engaging classes in math and science for children ages 4 to 14. UCLA Mathematics Project and UCLA Science Project are leading and collaborating with the Bethany Baptist Church to hold the academy for the second year.

TEP student teaches ethnic studies program in middle school

Andrew Gutierrez almost did not graduate from high school because a teacher wrongfully told him and other students of color that they did not meet graduation requirements. Now, he teaches middle school students about racial and ethnic history and empowerment in an ethnic studies program he helped pioneer.

Teaching kids how to distinguish fake news from real news

UCLA Teacher Education Program Professor Jeff Share advises K-12 teachers on how to educate students in critical media literacy. He teaches critical media literacy courses at UCLA, where he trains current and future K-12 teachers in ways to show students how to deconstruct media, create their own alternative messages and separate fake news from facts.

The conference on April 22 gathered educators, administrators and activists. Principal Leadership Institute students and Teacher Education Program students participated in the conference, which advocated to protect the civil rights of students and their families.

Professor Megan Franke Elected to the National Academy of Education

UCLA Teacher Education Program Professor Megan Loef Franke was elected to the National Academy of Education in 2017, one of three in the University of California system. Dr. Franke studies how teachers make use of research-based information about the development of children’s mathematical thinking (Cognitively Guided Instruction) and how CGI supports student learning in mathematics.

Professor Tyrone Howard Honored as 2017 AERA Fellow

UCLA Professor of Education Tyrone Howard has been selected as one of 14 scholars as a 2017 AERA Fellow by the American Educational Research Association. He is the founding and current executive director of the Black Male Institute at UCLA and the Associate Dean for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion at UCLA Ed & IS.

UCLA Ed to Pilot STEM Teacher Prep Program with Santa Monica College

The UCLA Integrated Program (UCLAIP)—which is expected to launch in Fall 2018—will be a partnership between Santa Monica College and UCLA to create an Integrated Teacher Preparation Program. There will be a pathway to a bachelor’s degree from UCLA, preliminary teaching credential, and BCLAD for STEM teachers.
