Sensemaking at Home Workshop

September 5, 2020 9:30 am - 11:00 am

Sensemaking at Home

Saturdays, September 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th

9:30 AM to 11:00 AM Online

How do we enact the NGSS guiding principles through distance learning? Join our four session series where we will identify ways to create science sensemaking explorations for online learning (synchronous & asynchronous). Our goal is to provide strategies, tools and a collaborative space to increase opportunities for student voice, choice, and public thinking.

You do not need to attend all sessions but are encouraged to do so.  These sessions will be recorded for internal use and evaluation.

Fee: $50 for all 4 sessions

Sensemaking at Home

Session 1 – Experience the Big Idea
September 5th 9:30-11:00

  • Big Ideas give students opportunities to deepen their understanding of core ideas in science and how they connect to areas of their interest and communities where they live.

Session 2 – Difference as an Asset
September 12th 9:30-11:00

  • In the classroom, students are able to access the same supplies and explorations. At home equal access to these materials may be difficult but should not limit opportunities for sensemaking.

Session 3 – Opportunities to Construct Meaning
September 19th 9:30-11:00

  • The science and engineering practices allow students to uncover “Big Ideas” to explain phenomena in both synchronous and asynchronous learning environments.

Session 4 – Empowering Students With Choice
September 26th 2020 9:30-11:00

  • Student choice in approaches to explore phenomenon allows them to pursue areas of expertise and interest.
