Improving Student Writing — Our Youngest Authors (Grades 3-5)

Upper elementary students are expected to break down prompts, find the main idea, and use text-based evidence to support their writing. They’re up to the challenge, and we are too. Join us as we build our repertoires as teachers of language arts, with a focus on helping students analyze and write about narrative and informational text. With our particular students in mind, we’ll think about their fascinations and everyday lived experiences. We’ll spend some time pinpointing what their strengths as writers look like, and then focus on next steps—for gifted learners, English Learners, Standard English Learners, and students with IEPs. Throughout, we’ll make connections to the CCSS.
