“Multiplication Is for White People: Raising Expectations for Other People’s Children”

Tyrone Howard discusses the significance of Lisa Delpit’s book “Multiplication Is for White People: Raising Expectations for Other People’s Children” during a book group gathering of teachers, parents and administrators.

The California Reading and Literature Project supports districts and schools as they work on increasing student achievement for African American students and gives site, district and community members an opportunity to network with each other. UCLA leaders facilitate professional learning community sessions three times throughout the school year. During each session we will address cultural and literacy issues affecting African American students grades K-12. This year we are reading Lisa Delpit’s new book, “Multiplication Is for White People: Raising Expectations for Other People’s Children,” and identifying what makes us angry enough to move into action to better support this student group.

BOOK DESCRIPTION
“As MacArthur award-winning educator Lisa Delpit reminds us—and as all research shows—there is no achievement gap at birth. In her long-awaited second book, Delpit presents a striking picture of the elements of contemporary public education that conspire against the prospects for poor children of color, creating a persistent gap in achievement during the school years that has eluded several decades of reform.”
