Be sure to mark your calendars for With Different Eyes: A Conference for Teachers of English Learners Across the Disciplines. Sponsored by the UCLA Writing Project, and co-sponsored by the National Writing Project, this conference celebrates its 20th anniversary of supporting teachers as they help their English learners to flourish in our schools. This year our theme is “Breaking Our Silences.” Not just helping our English learners gain power and voice--in English and in multiple languages--though this is certainly at the center of our work. But also propelling ourselves as teachers to speak up and take action when our freedoms are threatened.
Keynote speaker Otto Santa Ana, UCLA professor of Chicano Studies, will set the stage by challenging us with a key question: "How do we respond to America's threatened polyphony?" Reyna Grande, our special guest author, will end the day by sharing her novels and draft of a new memoir, a story of separations, immigration, coming of age. And in between our inspiring book-end speakers, our classroom colleagues K-university will engage us in hands-on workshops--demonstrating practices successful with their own English learners. These sets of concurrent workshops will focus on teaching and learning in all content areas.
Audience: Teachers and administrators K-University.
