Rebecca Chu is a national board certified, fifth-year teacher with a Masters in Education from the UCLA Teacher Education Program. She has taught four years at Hyde Park Elementary in Local District 3 and one year at NOW Academy in Local District 4. Her commitment to professional development is exemplified in her leadership roles and collaborative efforts and attendance in trainings which include: Thinking Maps, Write from the Beginning, Nike PE, Yoga Tools, FOSS, and enVision Math. Serving as grade level chair for the past two years, she realizes the importance of utilizing the collective strengths of her colleagues toward a mission of academic success. Her move to New Open World (NOW) Academy and the pilot school movement demonstrates her desire to seek a school culture that emphasizes teacher collaboration. She is currently working toward her administrative credential at the Principal Leadership Institute at UCLA.
New Open World Academy (NOW) is a traditional-calendar, LAUSD Pilot School housed at the old Ambassador Hotel site. We are a new autonomous public school working collaboratively with all stakeholders to reform education from the bottom-up. Located on the site where Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated, the vision and mission of our school is aligned to his educational ideals. We emphasize social justice and ecological awareness, differentiating instruction to meet each child's needs.
We came into existence when a group of dedicated teachers sought curricular and academic reform. After researching the Boston Pilot Schools, they wrote our school plan, LAUSD accepted it, and we opened our doors to our mid-city community in September of 2009. Like a charter, we are autonomous where curriculum, hiring, and budgeting are concerned. Professional developments drive our instruction and collaboration allows for implementing innovative approaches.
School Demographics Information
NOW Academy is a neighborhood school that serves the all students within our geographic boundaries. Our school relieved overcrowding in three neighboring public schools. Our students come from low socioeconomic households and have many risk factors. 93% of NOW's student body is on free and reduced lunch. A total of 461 students attend our school, 401 of which are Hispanic. Asians, Blacks, Whites, and Pacific Islanders are also represented on campus. However, during three of these weeks, NOW teachers are involved in intensive Professional Developments, working collaboratively to improve instruction.
