Program Features

Social Justice Agenda
TeachLA/TeachCOMPTON regards the racial, cultural, and linguistic diversity of the Los Angeles/Compton community as an asset in the construction of a high quality education for all children, especially low-income children of color in urban schools. Emphasis is placed on gaining knowledge and skills for working effectively with English language learners.

Coordinated Support
TeachLA/TeachCompton Interns are supported through a coordinated network of collaborative professionals, including course instructors, school site mentors, district and union representatives, principals, university field supervisors, and TeachLA/TeachCompton directors.

Cohort Structure
Because team building and support are essential for new as well as experienced teachers, TeachLA/TeachCompton Interns progress through the programs as a cohort where they develop high level collaborative, collegial, and networking relationships.

Field-Based
The integration of coursework and field-based teaching provides the forum for the blending of theory and practice. Intern teaching experiences are used with theory as a basis for course discussions, assignments, and assessment.

On-Site Locations
Courses will be offered at UTLA's Helen Bernstein Professional Development Center, UCLA, and LAUSD/CUSD school sites.

Intern Status
Interns teach on a University Internship Credential as full-time paid teachers hired by LAUSD/CUSD.
